Alison and her friends returned to the local kemana that evening. They had planned on playing around with their magic, but Alison noticed that Professor Heineken was down there, looking very shady. She let her friends go on without her as she called her magic and shrouded herself in shadow. It felt strange against her skin, comforting and yet oddly physical like cool silk. She used the darkness at the edges of the street to follow the professor, curious to see what he was doing.

Ira needed to speak to his contact again. Something was very wrong with his experiments. He had succeeded in tapping into the crystal and had drained some of the magic, but it didn’t flow as it should. It kept disintegrating and unraveling around him. His own magic grew increasingly erratic, and the nightmares—he couldn’t bear to think about those.

Something was following him. Ira paused and glanced back, trying to pinpoint the source of the prickling feeling. It was nearly always present now, just out of sight, but he could feel it. He drew himself a little taller and ducked into the small space between the shops where Melchior insisted on meeting.

A pair of vertebrae had joined the other bone shards around the edge of the area, reminders of what happened to people who got on Melchior’s bad side. The grizzled man stepped in when Ira was beginning to think that he wasn’t coming. His usual pair of shifters closed off the escape route. He’d been there enough times to know how this worked.

“And what can I do for you today?” Melchior licked his lips. “You have the appropriate payment, I assume.”

Ira bit back a sigh of frustration and held out three vials of dragon’s blood. He’d had to use a heavy sleeping spell on the dragon to draw those. Their blood was incredibly potent and rare, and he didn’t want to know what someone like Melchior would do with it.

“It isn’t working. The crystal is supposed to work with my magic to make me more powerful. Instead, mine is becoming volatile, and I can’t contain the crystal magic. I need to get to the heart of it.”

Melchior slowly raised an eyebrow.

“Do you take me for a complete fool? This is my home.”

“I’m close. I know I’m close,” Ira pleaded.

“You’re an addict,” Melchior snarled.

Ira took a step back in horror at that idea. He wasn’t an addict.

“Leave here. You will not go any deeper into the crystal.”

“But—”

Melchior held up his hand, and his shifters moved closer.

Ira nodded and left without another word. No good came from arguing with someone like him. He needed a stronger ally who could give him what he needed. If he could reach the heart of the crystal, he could resolve all his problems. He knew it. With one more vial of the kemana magic—the true heart magic— everything would fall into place. He was on the precipice of greatness.
